Bahia de las Aguilas
(Eagle Bay) is of such a breathtaking beauty
that it does not look real! Bahia de las Aguilas
is a protected area and we hope
that it stays this way forever, being an
integral part of the Jaragua National Park,
Dominican Republic.
There are no hotels, shops or restaurants in
Bahia de las Aguilas. Just nature at its
best. White sandy beaches and crystal clear
waters. Swim, walk and dream. It is located
in the province of Pedernales to the
Southwest of the Dominican Republic and is
part of the Jaragua National Park.
In
our company Colonial Tour and Travel we
believe that it is not necessary that this
zone be converted into another tourist pole
developed of Dominican Republic, we are
convinced that it is necessary that we
maintain some paradisiacal places intact,
without they are privatized or exploited at
tourist level in mass And that its beaches
and landscapes are enjoyed by all domestic
and foreign visitors without necessarily
having to stay in a resort to enjoy its
beaches and landscapes.
Colonial Tour and Travel also believes
that this area must be carefully developed
and create the necessary infrastructure to
develop an area of adventure and ecology
tourism, offering certain amenities to
visitors, such as: freshwater facilities,
electric power connections, Portable
toilets, shower cubicles, garbage
containers, day and night surveillance,
internet connection, medical clinics and
lifeguards.
Bay of the Eagles a part
of the National Park Jaragua. According to
surveys and opinions locally and
internationally, it is in this place that
the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican
Republic exist. Its beaches are so
beautiful, so white and its waters so
crystal clear that they amaze their
visitors. It is an area jealously protected
as it belongs to the Jaragua National Park,
in Bahia de las Aguilas has not yet been
approved to build tourist facilities, so we
will find a completely virgin and
uncontaminated area full of marine fauna and
coastal flora. This place constitutes the
main ecosystem of low energy beach protected
within the Park.
Bahia de las Aguilas
was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by
the United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the
government received the certificate that
accredits this area as being of global

The beaches and landscapes are impressive and virgins ! Although difficult to see, according to the Environment
authorities, around the bay, forming part of the 1,374 square
kilometers of the Jaragua National Park, are hidden 130 species of birds of
which 10 are endemic, 76 residents and 47 migratory. Coral, sea
stars, Pseudoterogorgia Gorgonians (marine invertebrates that
look like bush skeletons) and marine grasslands abound. It is
possible to see hawksbill turtles, as it is said that in these
beaches is the largest nesting in the Caribbean and the largest
number of young hawks in the world. Equally important are the
populations of rhinoceros iguana, coronaria pigeon, ash pigeon,
lambies and manatees. Endemic plants such as canelilla and
guanito coexist with guayacan, oak, gayuco and guazabara.
In Jaragua Park, established in 1983, important prehispanic
archaeological sites have also been found that register
indigenous settlements. In the caves El Guanal, La Poza and
Monga you can still see the pictographs made by the tainos
Due to its great biodiversity, the park was declared by the
Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 2002, together with the Lake
Enriquillo and Sierra de Bahoruco parks. And for other reasons
the beauty of the surroundings and the few precipitations -
Bahia de las Aguilas has been debating for years between the
lust of the great tourist entrepreneurs who want to build
permanent infrastructures in the area and the zeal of ecological
groups that, like the Coalition for the Defense of Protected
Areas, affirm that it is a fragile ecosystem "whose conservation
and public use demand a vision of the future and a high sense of
responsibility before the Dominican society and before the
world." As it is also a protected area, it is forbidden to camp,
make bonfires and leave trash in the undergrowth. Because of the
covers hanging from the trees and the dry sticks in the sand, it
is obvious that not everyone obeys the rules.
